Valene Smith-Posey has always wanted to help: help the world, help education, and help students. As a university professor, she spent many hours inside and outside the classroom helping students reach their goals. “Education is the solution to so many of the world’s problems,” says Valene, a CSU, Chico professor of anthropology for 31 years.
In her travels throughout the world, Valene has seen the conditions that create barriers to education. This prompted her to establish an individual charitable remainder trust. The flexible trust provides Valene with an annual income during her lifetime and will help provide students with scholarships in perpetuity. The trust also created substantial tax savings.
“It’s a very rewarding kind of investment,” says Valene. “You know that the money is being well used, and that those who are successful will unquestionably return the favor and make comparable investments in the next generation.”
Valene’s gifts to the College are helping students now and into the future. For more information on how you can help the students and programs at Chico State, please call the College Office of Advancement at 530-898-3022.
