Opioids

Opioids are drugs which act on the nervous system to relieve pain. Continued use and misuse can lead to physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms. They come in tablets, capsules, or injectable liquid.

Short-term effects

  • Drowsiness
  • Slowed breathing
  • Constipation
  • Unconsciousness
  • Nausea
  • Possibility for coma

Long-term effects

Continued use or misuse of opioids can result in physical dependence and addiction. The body adapts to the presence of the drug and withdrawal symptoms occur in use is reduced or stopped. These include:

  • Restlessness
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Insomnia
  • Diarrhea
