Peer Educator

Job Description: 

The Peer Educators (PEs) are a diverse group of CSU Chico students trained to educate their classmates about college high-risk drinking, drug use, substance use disorders, recovery and wellness issues in a positive, interactive, fun, and nonjudgmental manner. 

Comprehensive, required training prepares the PEs to facilitate dynamic education and outreach programs/services; encourage physical, mental, and spiritual health; create informative awareness and education events/activities; and promote community support to create a healthy campus culture. The Peer Educators are dedicated to providing education and community support with sensitivity to race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, and individual capabilities. 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities: 

  • Attending mandatory two-hour weekly training/team building/staffing meetings (Mondays/Wednesday 2:00 - 4:00 PM) 
  • Designing, developing, organizing, implementing and participating in campus-wide awareness/education activities and events 
  • Designing, developing and presenting outreach and education programs 
  • Developing and Staffing information tables at various events/activities 
  • Distributing and promoting flyers, brochures, and other promotional materials 
  • Assisting with the planning and implementation of major campus events/activities during high-risk times such as Welcome Week, Labor Day Weekend, Halloween, Cesar Chavez Day and graduation weekend 
  • Assist with Program Evaluation and relevant research as assigned 
  • Assisting CADEC Professional Staff as requested and assigned 
  • Other duties as assigned 


  • Gain extensive knowledge about alcohol, drugs, substance use disorders, recovery, mental health, wellness, health promotion theory and practice, program development, marketing and stress management. 
  • Become part of a highly skilled, diverse team of students committed to providing accurate, nonjudgmental college-health information to the CSU Chico community. 
  • Develop teaching, communication, presentation, collaboration and group facilitation skills. 
  • Become a recognized member of the Student Health Services and CADEC staff. 
  • Have an opportunity to contribute significantly to the growth of the Peer Education program.

Other Requirements: 

  • Must be an enrolled, full time CSU Chico student in good academic standing 
  • Must possess a 2.5 minimum GPA 
  • Ability to commit two semesters to the peer educator position 
  • Must be present during mandatory training, meetings, events, activities unless advance, reasonable arrangements have been approved with professional staff 
  • Although we encourage involvement in many other activities at the University and community, applicant must be able to balance other activities with academics and the peer educator commitment 
  • All CADEC student employees are required to sign a detailed employment contract each semester. The contract is available for viewing in the CADEC office, at 633 Brice Avenue during regular business hours, M - F 8 am - 5 pm. 
  • We strongly recommend visiting the CADEC Office and visiting with current Peer Educators and Professional Staff and viewing the Student Employment Contract prior to applying.
