CAPE/Book in Common Event: Ethics and Journalism

Wednesday, February 17th, 7:30 p.m.

PAC 134

Journalists such as Steve Lopez, author of The Soloist, who work intensively with their subjects over long time periods, often reap substantial rewards and learn much about the lives of their sources. However, these journalists also risk compromising their objectivity as they develop deep relationships with their sources that sometimes border on—or enter the realm of—friendship.

Join us for a CAPE forum, in conjunction with the Chico Book in Common, The Soloist, where we will explore the ways in which close relationships between journalists and their sources sometimes compromise (and sometimes enhance) journalistic objectivity. Aaron Quinn, Professor of Journalism at CSU, Chico, will speak on journalistic objectivity as it relates to this "immersive journalism." Included in his talk will be a photo-slideshow featuring the work of a small group of photojournalism students who spent the better part of the fall semester documenting homelessness in Chico. These young photojournalists will also be on hand to recount the challenges and triumphs of visually documenting our community's homeless.
