Scott G. McNall,
Special Assistant to the President on Sustainability

Campus sustainability is not simple, but it is essential.

The conservationist's most important task, if we are to save the earth, is to educate.

Educating for Sustainability

We aspire to make Chico State the distinctive “green” campus in California and become a natural leader in environmental education, science, and public policy analysis. With our environmentally responsive facilities and overarching focus on sustainability, we will enhance a strong existing reputation for research and stewardship.

Education for sustainable development is values-driven. We seek to create a dialog with those who share our vision as we build and maintain communities of mutual interest and engagement. All university departments and programs are invited to address sustainability through course offerings, special topics, and conferences.

The campus Environmental Literacy Program creates opportunities to hold informed conversations with our community about the ecological systems that we depend upon. This program explores natural processes of recycling, regeneration, and renewal as applied to clean air, clean water, and biodiversity. We are preparing students to seek solutions to environmental problems.

Believing that each generation owes something to those who follow, we will create environmentally literate citizens who embrace sustainability as a way of living. In seeking to develop the whole person, we are aware that our individual and collective actions have economic, social, and environmental consequences. We aspire to lead the citizens and communities of our Northern California service area by practicing what we teach. Chico State’s expertise and leadership in sustainability is more than noble words, it is humble action.
