
The BCLAD program is designed to prepare competent BCLAD teachers
in the areas of language proficiency, multicultural issues in
education, and second language instructional methodology that
will enable them to teach all children effectively in the core
academic areas.
This two-semester, graduate level professional preparation program
prepares students to teach in bilingual/crosscultural classrooms
and in a variety of educational settings with students from culurally
and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Candidates participate in bilingual/crosscultural classrooms and in classrooms promoting academic language development and conceptual understanding for linguistically diverse students. Opportunities for both observation and instruction prepare candidates for the realites of effective service delivery for English Learners.

Multiple Subject (grades K-6) and Single Subject (grades 7-12) students come from a variety of academic majors and linguistic backgrounds, providing a range of experiences and perspectives for all program participants. BCLAD (Spanish English) students must complete the Bilingual/Crosscultural Option prerequisites prior to program admission. This Option includes courses in language, culture, and methodology.

Prior to being recommended for the BCLAD emphasis, students
in the professional preparation program must demonstrate proficiency
in Spanish and English, and knowledge of Latino culture.
Bilingual students in languages other than Spanish are encouraged
to participate in the BCLAD program. They are recommended
for the ESP42 premaliary credential and have the option of adding
the BCLAD emphasis in their respective language through state
testing.
The program promotes strategies to foster language development,
enhance crosscultural understanding, and address the educational
needs of special education students. University based seminars
provide students with exposure to bilingual and English
Language Development (ELD) program models, legal mandates,
instructional practices, and other issues vital in establishing
the foundation for later professional leadership.
Students participate in bilingual/crosscultural classrooms and
in classrooms which provide ELD and Specially Designed Academic
Instruction in English (SDAIE) for ELs. These opportunities
for both observation and instruction prepare candidates for the
realities of effective service delivery for ELs.
