Recent demographic changes affecting California Public Schools have required a reconsideration of the basic training for all new teachers, and the specialized retraining for all teachers who instruct students whose language is other than English.

It is critical that all teachers meet the pedagogical needs of diverse students and be sensitive to the lingustics and cutural needs of all students.  In order to meet this challenge, California State University, Chico has designed CLAD Certification for Credentialed Teachers.

The courses for the Crosscultural, Language, and the Academic Development (CLAD) certificate will provide the basic knowledge necessary to meet the needs of California's diverse student population. This will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Knowledge of the nature, structure, use ad acquistion of first and second language.
  • Bilingual and ESL models and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of culture, learning styles, and crosscultural communication, including the nature of culture.
