Dr. Cortez serves as tenured full professor. He has taught at
CSU, Chico for the past twenty-six academic years. He served as
Director of the Center for Bilingual/Multicultural studies from
his initial hire in 1980 until 1996. During that time he was instrumental
in securing over three millions dollars in external funds for
this institution from state, federal and international sources.
Dr. Cortez was born in El Paso Texas and earned his B.A. and
M.A. degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso. He holds
a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle.
Dr. Cortez has addressed audiences of educators at state and national
venues as a keynote speaker and special topic presenter on issues
pertinent to education of the linguistically and culturally diverse
student population. Dr. Cortez was named California State University,
Chico Outstanding Professor 1992-1993 and, was subsequently a
candidate for the outstanding Professor for the California State
University system.
He currently teaches courses in Reading, English Language Development,
Children’s Literature and supervises student teachers. He
is engaged in research areas related to English Language Development
Curriculum, Literacy and Children’s Literature. Recent publications
include teachers choices, selection of Exemplary Literature and
Case studies of Avid Readers: What We Learned and Why. This is
a Three-Year Research Study of Literacy.
