Dr. Montes serves as a lecturer in California State University,
Chico Professional Studies in Education Department and the Center
for Bilingual/Multicultural Studies. She has taught at CSU,
Chico for the past five years.
Dr. Montes recieved her Special Education and Elementary Education
teaching credentials from Bowling Green State University. Her
interest in Special Education began because of her personal
experiences assisting her brother and parents navigate a system
foreign to them in both language and culture. Dr. Montes began
her career as an elementary school techer in a small agricultural
community in Ohio. This school was the same school she attended
as a student.
Dr. Montes moved to California and earned a California teaching
credential with a Bilingual/Crosscultural Language and Academic
Development (BCLAD) emphasis. She was hired to teach in both
bilingual and special education settings. She was instrumental
in initiating and administering a Two Way Immersion (TWI) school
in Redwood City, California. She served as a classroom teacher,
resource teacher, and principal at the school.
Dr. Montes received her Master of Arts Degree in Eductional
Policy Analysis from Stanford Unversity and a Doctorate in Education
from the University of Southern California. Her research interests
include the implementation of a Professional Development School
Model for the prepartion of pre-service candidates, the research
of best practice in offering TWI programs, and the implementation
of effective Professional Development for veteran teachers.
Her research includes a Focused Inquiry Model utilizing Action
Research in the elementary classroom. Dr. Montes has worked
closely with Bay Area Schools to develop and further refine
existing TWI programs.
