The Department of Communication Design focuses on the study of the structure, processes, aesthetics, functions, and effects and creation of mediated communication.
Students have the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in a wide array of highly integrated design applications. At the undergraduate level the Department aspires to contribute to a broad education for majors by raising their level of visual, aural, and written communication literacy, as well as their critical thinking ability by developing their understanding and appreciation of mediated message creation and exchanges.
The Department advances knowledge as well as skills needed for future employment in graphic communication, radio, television, video production, advertising, business, government, education, and consulting wherein communication design skills are essential.
It is with great sadness that we let you know that John Long, our great friend and longtime Chairman of the Department of Communication Design, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 14, of an apparent heart attack. He was 56.
John earned his PhD from the University of Utah. He joined the faculty at CSU, Chico in 1990. John was an expert on electronic media policy and regulation, and his recent publications were on interactive video game technologies, distance learning and public television. He was active in the Broadcast Education Association and worked tirelessly with industry contacts to secure internships for students.
