Daniel Clark was born on July 16, 1972 in Livermore, California. He attended California State University, Chico where he participated in undergraduate research under the dual mentorship of Dr. Larry Kirk and Dr. Larry Hanne. During this time he received several academic awards that included the best undergraduate research poster/project, outstanding achievement in general chemistry, and outstanding achievement in organic chemistry. He graduated in 1997 with a BS in biology (physiology/cell biology emphasis), and a minor in chemistry. He pursued graduate work at Utah State University working with Dr. Scott Ensign on the enzymology of bacterial acetone and epoxypropane metabolism. He received his PhD in biochemistry in December, 2001. Shortly thereafter Clark was hired by Stratagene, in La Jolla, as a staff scientist in the research and development group of Dr. Jeff Braman. While at Strategene, a company renowned for its portfolio of molecular biology products, Clark pioneered an effort to develop tools for researchers in the fields of biological mass spectrometry and proteomics.

Late in the summer of 2005 Clark joined the faculty at California State University, Chico. Upon arrival he facilitated the transfer of the LCQ Advantage Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer that he purchased, used, and maintained at Stratagene. He also negotiated with Stratagene to donate several Pharmacia FPLCs for protein purification. Collectively, these items filled deficiencies that once existed in the array of biochemical instrumentation at CSU, Chico. His research interests include mechanistic enzymology, microbial biodegradation and natural product biosynthesis, microbial proteomics and metabolomics, and the application of mass spectrometry to biological and environmental research. Clark is very excited to have the opportunity to work with student researchers and to teach a variety of courses ranging from biochemistry to general chemistry and the associated laboratories. In addition to well organized courses and relevant curriculum, he intends to devise an industrial outreach program that will establish and maintain relationships with the biotechnology industry. The enduring goal of this program will be to provide new educational and employment opportunities for students.
