Three Essential Characteristics of Academic Service Learning
- Relevant and meaningful service with the community. Service must be provided in the community that is both relevant and meaningful to all stakeholding parties.
- Enhanced academic learning. Providing relevant and meaningful service to the com-munity entails not only serving the community but also enhancing student academic learning in the course.
- Purposeful civic learning. Providing relevant and meaningful service to the community entails not only enhancing student academic learning in the course, but also directly and intentionally preparing students for active civic participation in a diverse democratic society
