WELCOME to the Chico State University School of Nursing!!!!! You have made it!!!

Your first semester in the nursing program is an exciting introduction to the world of nursing and professional health care. You will gain the beginning skills necessary to provide competent patient care utilizing nursing assessment tools. The first semester nursing program at CSUC is all about learning new skills, being organized, focusing on nursing, and being flexible. You will learn things in your first semester that will be invaluable to you for the rest of your career. Keep your mind open and learn as much as you can. It is a truly wonderful experience that will help you grow both mentally and emotionally.

Here are a few tips that may aid you in becoming a more successful student and a better nurse:

  1. Be organized.
  2. Get binders right away and label all your classes separately (do this on the first day of school).
  3. Write the name of your classes on the binders with the full name so you won't refer to the class as 118 or N84.
  4. Come to class on time. It is rude to be late and/or completely unacceptable to many professors (especially for an exam).
  5. If you are going to eat in class, respect your classmates right to learn and be quiet.
  6. Buy a calendar and use it! Write in schedules for classes, dates for the completion of projects, and exam times. This will help you stay focused and organized!!
  7. Read the chapters ahead of time and pay attention in class.
  8. Buy a tape recorder and listen to lectures a second time.
  9. Put some money on your Wild Cat card to be used in case of emergencies like needed: photo copies, school supplies, or junk/brain food.
  10. Have a positive attitude in everything you do.
  11. Participate in everything you can, get as much experience as possible. Ask clinical nurses for procedure opportunities, if you don't, learning experiences may slip by. Jump in with a positive attitude and don't be afraid to ask/beg.
  12. There are many people to support you through out the program, tap your resources. If you are having any problems, don' ASK for help.
  13. Go to CNSA meetings and get involved in nursing.
  14. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!
