Leadership and Psychiatric Nursing
The focus of this fourth semester is leadership and
psychiatric nursing. This is the semester that you will learn some of the
most valuable tools in nursing to aid you in being a Team Leader, Unit Manager,
House Supervisor, or desired professional goal. Nursing will finally come
together this semester and you will truly begin to understand your role as
a baccalaureate degree nurse.
The clinical rotation associated with leadership
is an incredible experience. You will be paired with a RN in the hospital
who will be designated as your preceptor. You will work only with your preceptor
on her scheduled days of work. Your goal is to coordinate with your preceptor
and gradually assume all the duties and responsibilities for their full patient
load. You will have many opportunities to practice and increase your clinical
skills. In addition, you will be expected to develop skills in delegating
and directing the work of supporting staff. You will learn how to communicate
with all levels of the health care team from the CNAS to the doctors. You
will take and document verbal orders, start IV's , administer all medications
required by your preceptor's patients, and give report to oncoming staff.
You will write weekly logs to document your progress to your instructors.
As an end result you will be a better-prepared nurse for the job of RN and
nurse leader.
The psychiatric segment of this semester includes
an in-depth exploration of mental disorders and a rotation through numerous
treatment facilities in the surrounding Chico area. You will have numerous
skills labs that will include interactive roll play with your colleagues with
the focus of developing better communication, listening, and assessment skills.
This is an exciting rotation that will offer opportunities to experience the
special challenges of establishing and maintaining the nurse-patient relationship
with this patient population.
