Teaching/Research
Joining the Chico State faculty in 1990, Dr. Deberg has taught a variety of courses in financial and managerial accounting and has published several articles in refereed academic journals, serving three years as associate editor of the Journal of Accounting Education. From 1995 to 1997, he served as project co-director of a U.S. Department of Education grant titled “Reengineering Elementary Accounting.” Dr. Deberg was a leader in reengineering principles of accounting during this time period when CSU, Chico made significant changes in both content and pedagogy in principles of accounting. He is an active consultant in the areas of youth entrepreneurship and community service-learning. He is a former Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow at CSU, Chico (1993 – 2005), serving as advisor the CSU, Chico Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team for 12 years. He is the founder of Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE), a program that encourages high school youth to create commercial and social entrepreneurial ventures on their high school campuses under the direction of university students who serve as their business consultants. In the past eight years, Dr. Deberg has traveled to over 20 countries to introduce them to SAGE and promote youth entrepreneurship, including Norway, Poland, South Africa, China, Philippines, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Russia, Ukraine, Uruguay, Spain, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates.
