Teaching/Research
Dr. Toy joined the California State University, Chico facultyin 1989. He has taught a number of courses at the PhD, MBA, Executive MBA and undergraduate levels at CSU, Chico and at Penn State University, University of Washington, University of Oregon, and Willamette College. Those courses include Marketing Engineering, Marketing Research, Multivariate Analysis for Business, Consumer Behavior, Strategic Marketing, Marketing Management, Advertising Strategy, Data Mining in Business and Applied Statistics for Business Decision Making. He is currently teaching Marketing Engineering (MBA and Professional MBA) and Marketing Research and Introduction to Marketing (undergraduate). He has won a number of teaching awards, including national recognition by Business Week as one of the best MBA teachers in the country, as well as other collegewide distinctions, including MBA Teacher of the Year at California State University, Chico, Penn State, University of Oregon, and University of Washington, in addition to a number of undergraduate teaching awards at each of these institutions.
Dr. Toy’s research interests include the impact of green/sustainable residential building practices on energy use, data mining and marketing engineering applications in marketing, and understanding student group dynamics in academic settings. Dr. Toy has written more than 50 published articles in six different disciplines, including marketing, management science, management, accounting, finance, and leisure research. He is also the author of a book titled HYCON: Conjoint Analysis and Choice Simulations in Marketing with Paul Green.
Dr. Toy was a staff consultant for the Fluid Milk Industry in Washington, DC; the AHMAC Management Group in Philadelphia, PA; the Strategic Management Group in Philadelphia, PA; and ITSMA in Boston, MA. He has also consulted with a number of companies, including Adidas, Caterpillar Tractor, Comcast, Gore Industries, General Motors, and Recreation Equipment Company. He has been involved in 16 grant projects during his tenure at CSU, Chico. Most recently, he is studying the impact of sustainable homes on energy use in the North State.
