Four teams of California State University, Chico students put their analytical skills to the test on Friday, Dec. 1 by participating in the first ever Chico State Stock Pitch Competition. Participation in the competition was open to all current students from any major on campus with an interest in financial analysis.

The competition, hosted by the Center for Excellence in Finance, tasked students with analyzing a company of their choosing, determining the merits for why an investor would buy or sell the company stock and presenting their findings to a panel of three industry judges. Winners of the local competition will advance to a regional stock pitch competition including teams from other Northern California universities in March 2018, including Humboldt State University and San Francisco State University.

Competitors presented their analysis to a panel of finance executives and alumni, including Bill Carson (BA, Economics, ’68), senior vice president of investments and branch manager at Stifel Financial Corporation; Joe Christensen (BS, Business Administration, ’90), head of structured products research at Wells Capital Management; and Ryan Rainbolt (BS, Business Administration, ’95), senior vice president and wealth management advisor for Merrill Lynch.

Each team had 10 minutes to give their investment objectives and thesis along with supporting evidence based on their research and data analysis to convince the judges of their investment strategy. Following each presentation, the judges challenged the teams with a 10-minute question-and-answer session. The top teams won cash prizes and will advance to the regional competition in March. The presenting companies included Aerojet Rocketdyne, Nvidia, Salesforce and Skyworks Solutions.

Prior to the competition, a panel discussion among the judges helped students learn about finance career opportunities and what it takes to enter the high-powered finance world.
