STEPS for Assessment

STEPS is a student–built, faculty–led, and administratively designed assessment system. The easy to use Web-based interface supports the evaluation of course–embedded student work by both internal and external stakeholders. While the system has a portfolio component that is attractive to students, the real focus of STEPS is the assessment of student assignments (part of normal course work) that is linked to program learning goals or student learning outcomes. Because the design includes work submitted by the students, validation of authenticity by faculty, and double–blind review by the evaluators, the system supports assessment standards set by most accrediting agencies. Other key features of the system include the storage of some student characteristics, the use of analytic rubrics (if desired), and customizable goal statements, rubric traits, and assessment scales.
