Welcome to the website of the B.A. in Humanities at California State University, Chico.
Humanities is a program devoted to the study, appreciation, and analysis of cultural traditions from an interdisciplinary perspective. It focuses on the arts (including literature, music, theatre, sculpture, painting, architecture, film) and ideas (philosophical trends, artistic movements, and religious traditions) by examining individual works and thinkers in their particular cultural and historical contexts. The program allows students to specialize in a particular period (such as classical antiquity, the Medieval period, the Renaissance, and Modernism) or in cultures of Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
All humanities students study a foreign language at the advanced intermediate level (in French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese) or at the advanced beginning level (in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Latin, or Russian).
The Department of Comparative Religion and Humanities at Chico State can be found on the third floor of the new Arts and Humanities building (ARTS 377), using the stairway or elevator closest to 2nd Street and the Madison Bear Garden (at the far end of the courtyard of the building).
