Agenda for September 28, 2002

Science vs. Pseudoscience

8:30 - 9:00 Coffee and Registration Holt Hall, Room 268

9 am

Barbara Adams will lead us through some activities that deal with the area of science that really isn't science but, through the power of suggestion, or lack of scientific education, can resemble science. How to recognize pseudoscience is becoming increasingly difficult as the level of sophistication of our scientific endeavors increases. Be looking for current topics that you recognize as pseudoscience and be ready for a spirited discussion of how to deal with these in the classroom.

UFO's are obvious topics. If you've ever been to New Orleans (or Mangrove Ave. - Madame Ruby) you know how popular palm reading, fortune telling, Taro cards, etc. etc. can be. What about astrology? How did these beliefs arise? How is science different? Barbara will have some advance reading for you, so check this site again one week before the meeting.

12noon Lunch is served - Catch up and get your Certificates (suitable for framing), T/polo shirt (if you ordered one) and telescope (if you ordered one). Kris Koenig will be here the whole day to assist with questions on the set up and operation of the telescopes

1 pm Jim Pushnik of the Department of Biological Sciences will fill us in on some remarkable technology that is being used to observe Earth from space. Mission to Planet Earth or the Earth Observing System is a powerful tool for remotely sensing the Earth's surface. The sensitivity of the technology is as exact as determining the levels of nitrogen in crops for fertilizer level requirements.

2:30 pm Jackie Mussleman will start the ball rolling to share plans for the classroom this year. Jackie has already started the astronomy unit. Bring your plans to share with everyone.

After lessons have been discussed, Bev Marcum will tell us about some exciting happenings at the Hands on Lab on campus. Lesson Study opportunities will begin this semester in the lab and we are looking for interested teachers to play a role as Lesson Study group leaders.

4pm Adjourn - Have a safe trip home
