Announcing the Fall 2002

Hands on Lab (HOL) experiences

for elementary students!

An additional option for teachers in HOL this year is to participate in Lesson Study Workships in science.

In collaboration with the California Science Project of Inland Northern California, special Lesson Study discussions will be held to look specifically at 4th and 5th grade California Science standards. The discussions will be infformal, and in conjunction with viewing the Hands-On Lab, they should be extremely helpful and useful to elementary teachers.

Hands-On Lab

Experiences in Science

Fall 2002

Introduction to

Lesson Study

For Teachers

The lab experiences are fun and engaging, active-learning experiments in Chemistry, Biology, and Physical Science. They are offered by university students studying science and education and are held in an actual laboratory on the CSU, Chico campus.

Labs last 50 minutes and are offered Wednesday through Friday at 9am, 10:15am, and 11:30am (beginning 10/2/02). The cost is $10 per class. Call the Center (898-4322) to reserve a time. A map and confirmation letter will be sent when you make your reservation.

Lab options for Grade 4:

Magnetism: "Opposites attract - likes repel" Discover the properties of magnets. Learn what magnets attract and why. Make your own magnets. Available on Thursdays.

Electricity: "Get charged up for the electrifying experience" Magnetism lab is a prerequisite. Learn how electricity and magnetism are related. Design a circuit that lights a bulb, and make a working electric motor. Available on Thursdays.

Lab options for Grade 5:

Matter:"It's elementary my dear Watson" The great Oobleck Matter Mystery demonstrates some basic principles of chemistry and the Periodic Table. Available on Wednesdays.

Water: "Water, water, is everywhere" Properties of water and phase changes are demonstrated in this highly choreographed lab. Available on Wednesdays.

Digestion: "Are you what you eat?" Breaking down the digestive system step by step - the mechanical and chemical aspects of digestion. Available on Fridays.

Photosynthesis: "Why are plants green?" Discover the tiny energy traps inside plants where sunlight is used to make sugar. Available on Fridays.

  • Want to teach more science?
  • Tired of planning and teaching in isolation?
  • Observe live lessons in 4th or 5th grade science in the Hands-On Lab at CSU, Chico

The California Science Project of Inland Northern California (CSP-INC) will host Lesson Study introductory workshops in the Hands-On Lab.

There are three different ways you can participate in this program. You may attend any of these options, or all if you would like.

There is no cost for this program and substitute reimbursement for participating teachers is available for a limited number of school teams attending.

Workshop options:

  • October 16, 2002 It's Elementary, My Dear Watson

Periodic Table and Matter state standards will be addressed in this hands-on science lesson.

  • November 8, 2002 Why Are Plants Green?

Discover the tiny energy traps in plants and see how they actually capture light to make sugar.

Both lesson options will be taught at 11:30am and the introduction to Lesson Study will take place from 12:30-2:30pm, with lunch provided.

  • Pick a lesson - any lesson

If you would like to observe any of the lessons (see schedule on opposite page), please contact Bev Marcum at 898-5539, or e-mail, bmarcum@csuchico.edu

Discussions of the content for 4th or 5th grade science and the Lesson Study approach to collaborative lessson design can be scheduled to meet the needs of schools on an "as requested"basis.
