the technology; traits that have been commercialized; traits that are being
researched and are expected to be commercialized in the near future; the
regulatory process/requirements for environmental safety, food and feed
safety, molecular characterization, and insect resistant management; grower
and public acceptance and why each group feels the way they do; sharing
technology with developing nations. Employment opportunities with
agriculture biotechnology companies will be discussed; type of careers

NextWave:
This
workshop will help those new to NextWave. The Next Wave subscription,
paid for by CSUPERB, is now up and running on your local CSU campus. It
is a career resource tool for science students and faculty. All you have
to do is go to the Next Wave website http://nextwave.sciencemag.org
on any networked computer on your campus to use the resource. Science's
Next Wave is the weekly online publication that focuses on the careers
of scientists—from undergraduates to faculty. Next Wave is published
by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Science
magazine. The site includes weekly news, alternative career profiles,
discussion forums, career advice and funding information.

On-line
Courses: In a follow-up to our last year's workshop on
on-line courses, a series of lectures will be held on creation
and maintenance of courses in the molecular life sciences,
biotechnology and related fields. The movement of curriculum
into the synchronous and asynchronous long-distance, remote
arenas is happening at an accelerating pace. These sessions
will discuss mechanics, technologies, assessments and proven
case studies. Presented by
the Center for Distance Learning, Interwork Institute, SDSU.

Bio-Rad
Proteomics and Protein Array Technologies: Bio-Rad Laboratories presents
a technology workshop on Proteomics and Protein Arrays: Proteomics
is the systematic analysis of protein functions and expression patterns
in tissues and involves the isolation, separation, identification and functional
characterization of the proteins in an organism. Bio-Rad Laboratories presents
the ProteomeWorks system: an integrated set of tools and technologies that
enable protein function discovery. Take the investigation further using
the Bio-Plex Protein Array System for profiling multiple biomolecules in
a single sample. For more information go to discover.bio-rad.com

Special
Note to Community College Faculty: You are welcome to attend
any part of the CSUPERB Annual Conference. If you are attending any
time on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, you MUST
register with CSUPERB. Although CSUPERB cannot pay for any of your
travel or lodging, you do need to register with them so they know how many
people will be attending and eating, as they do cover the cost of meals
for CC faculty members. Please
and register for the symposium and Saturday Special. Travel and lodging
must be paid by the community college attendee. The ED>Net Biotech
Center Directors often sponsor travel funds for faculty members to attend
this conference. Contact them directly. If you do not know your regional
director and center, please go to www.cccbiotech.org
to find the appropriate director and center.
In
partnership with CSUPERB, The "Saturday Special" is sponsored by:
