Development of Stem Cell Laboratory Courses in the CSU

Faculty and departments across the CSU are designing, planning and implementing stem cell laboratory modules and courses. The Stem Cell Workshop II will create a forum for (i) sharing information about and lessons learned in pilot course offerings, (ii) training CSU faculty interested in offering stem cell laboratories, and (iii) building collaborations for future funding opportunities.



SPECIFIC AIMS – The 2008 CSUPERB Stem Cell Workshop will provide the participants with:

(1) Present technical advances in stem cell research through seminars and discussions;
(2) Provide hands-on laboratory training in basic stem cell culturing techniques;
(3) Offer strategies to implementing stem cell laboratory courses;
(4) Review funding opportunities available to support stem cell laboratory courses.

SELECTION OF WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS
– CSUPERB has provided funding to cover workshop costs and participant expenses. This workshop will accommodate 10 CSU faculty with experience in cell culture techniques. Applicants will be prioritized based on the following criteria:

 

(1) The applicant’s interest in designing and implementing a stem cell laboratory course at a CSU campus;
(2) The applicant’s interest in expanding an existing CSU biology-based laboratory course to include a module on stem cell applications;
(3) The commitment of the applicant’s department and college/university to support the development of a stem cell laboratory course/module [A supporting letter from the applicant's department chair is required.]


MEALS, LODGING and TRAVEL- Meals and lodging will be provided for the participants during the 5-day workshop. Lodging will be provided for the participants. The Fullerton Marriott is within walking distance to CSU Fullerton where the workshop will take place [Maps and Transportation to the Fullerton Marriott]. A modest amount of funding is also available to reimburse participants for travel.
