Cross-Listing WebCT Courses

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I request a cross-list?

  • Click on CSU, Chico Faculty WebCT Resources in MyWebCT
(This is a Bookmark in MyWebCT that points to http://www.csuchico.edu/tlp/webct/faculty/)
  • Click on the link under "Cross-listing" your course environments" and follow the instructions provided
  • You will know your cross-list request has been completed when MyWebCT displays the Master and Alias courses you requested. (Requests will typically be processed Monday and Thursday evenings).

2. Why would I want to do this?

Cross-Listing allows you to share (and maintain) a single WebCT course in support of multiple course sections.
You only have to manage one set of content, and you only have to go to one place to conduct all of your online course activities.

3. How does cross-listing work?

When you make your request, you specify a Master Course and one or more Alias Courses. The course content (and any existing student activity) in the Master Course are preserved. The course content (and any existing student activity) in the Alias Course are deleted and the Alias courses are pointed directly to the Master Course.

4. When should I request a cross-list?

The best time to request a cross-list is during the two weeks immediately preceding a term. For Fall 2003, this period is August 18 - August 24. You can request cross-lists after classes begin, but be aware that any content or student activity in newly established Alias courses will be lost.

5. What courses are automatically cross-listed?

Some courses are automatically cross-listed in WebCT. These include:

  • Courses offered by different departments, but in the same place at the same time:
    ( e.g. CMST256, SOCI256, MJIS256)
  • Live Internet courses with on-campus and distance learning sections:
    ( e.g. SOCI165-70 and SOCI165-72)
  • Large lectures that support multiple sections in the same place at the same time and with same instructor

6. How do I know if my cross-list has been created?

Once a cross-list has been completed, you will see the cross-list indicated in MyWebCT. In the example provided, ART207-01 (TRACS10335) is a Master course with ART207-06 (TRACS 10340) listed as an "aka" or Alias to the Master course.

ART 207 01 (Development of Children's Art - 10335)
Also known as: ART 207 06 (Development of Children's Art - 10340)
Instructor: Sharon Smith
My Role: Designer
News: There is no news for this course.

7. What if I want to split a cross-list?

If you require separate WebCT environments for sections which have been automatically cross-listed, you can request that they be split using the link provided above. You would then need to upload and manage content in each of the course sections. Note: If a split is requested after the start of a semester, student activity from the Master course will not move to the alias courses.
