EAP Testing and Benefits

The EAP test is an augmentation to the California Standards Test that is administered each spring to all public high school students in the 11th grade. In mathematics, the augmentation consists of 15 extra multiple choice questions. In English, the augmentation consists of 15 extra multiple choice questions and a written essay.

Students who elect to answer the extra questions will be issued a report by the California State University. The report will indicate the readiness of the student to succeed in college level mathematics and English. Students who show readiness at the college level in English will be issued exemptions from the English Placement Test (EPT). Students who show readiness to do college level work in mathematics will be issued conditional exemptions from taking the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam. This conditional exemption will be converted to a full exemption provided the student maintains their mathematics skill through the senior year by completing a mathematics course at or above the Algebra II level, or by completing an approved senior year experience. Some students who show exceptional ability on the EAP mathematics test will be issued full exemptions from the ELM.
