Chico State College of ECC honors Lauren Pitcher

The California State University, Chico College of Engineering, Computer Science & Construction Management (ECC) named Lauren Pitcher (CIVL, junior) this year's Outstanding Student Leader. The recognition was highlighted at the 28th Annual University Awards Reception on Tuesday, March 28 in Chico State's BMU.

Civil Engineering Department Chair, Steffen Mehl introduced Pitcher's award and outlined her many leadership achievements during her time at Chico State. Among them, Mehl noted her secretary position with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) chapter at Chico State and her management role for the Concrete Canoe Team.

Most notably, Pitcher is chairing the host committee for 2017 ASCE Mid-Pacific Regional Conference, coming to Chico State April 20-22, 2017. The multi-day competition will draw more than 600 students from across the west coast, Canada and China. In addition to managing the conference, Pitcher's team has raised more than $90,000 for the event.

Mehl described the attributes he appreciates in a leader, all things he says Pitcher embodies.

"She is highly organized and communicates well. She gets things done," Mehl said. "That's what I like to see in a leader."

In addition to her recognition at Chico State, Mehl revealed that Pitcher was just selected for an ASCE Student Chapter Sacramento Section Alfred R. Golze Scholarship. Pitcher competed against students from UC Davis, University of the Pacific, Sacramento State and more for this recognition.
