Professor James O'Toole specializes in microeconomics (Econ 301) and its applied fields such as public finance (Econ 335 & Econ 435), public choice, and urban economics (Econ 360). Professor O'Toole is especially interested in the use of simple economic principles to analyze the true costs and benefits of government programs. He is also interested in studying ways to achieve public goals through the use of private incentives in the market place. Professor O'Toole has coauthored, with John Orr, several software programs and exercises for use in principles of economics classes and he is always searching for better ways to use the computer to teach economics.
