Lucas Hired as Academic Evaluator

Photo of Shawna LucasShawna Lucas, a second-generation campus employee and a Chico State alumna, was hired as an academic evaluator in the Office of the Registrar in June. She is the daughter of Linda Wimmer who worked in the Career Center for 23 years.

Lucas graduated from Chico State in 2011 with a degree in social sciences and an emphasis on career and life planning. After college, she went to work for Butte College in the student services call center. Her responsibilities included answering the front line phones, which involved registering students, helping students drop classes, processing fee payments, answering admissions questions, and much more. She generally dealt with over 200 calls a day.

After four years in the call center, Lucas moved over to the Butte College assessment office as an evaluator. This experience encouraged her to apply for the evaluator position here at Chico State. In her new position, she handles transfer course evaluations, graduation evaluations, and verification of completion of degree requirements utilizing the Degree Progress Report).Photo of the Lucas'

Lucas plans on pursuing a master’s in education. She has applied for admission to the graduate school for entry in spring 2016. Getting her master’s degree is one of Lucas’ bucket list items and she is determined to complete it.

In September 2007, Lucas met now-husband, Daniel, at a birthday party of a mutual friend. It was love at first sight. The couple married two and a half years later and now have two beautiful sons. Bryar (like the character in Sleeping Beauty) is two and a half years old, and Dylan is now a very active one-year-old. The two boys are best friends as well as worst enemies, which makes every day an adventure.

Photo of the LucasLucas’ husband loves the outdoors and the family spends a lot of time cabin-camping and fishing. One of the family’s favorite spots to visit is the R-Ranch in Hornbrook, California. Lucas has a love of fishing that she acquired from her mom (that’s right, mom, not dad). She has attempted to pass her love of fishing on to Bryar, but he prefers swinging the pole around and was not a fan after going to a local “Hooked on Fishing” event. Maybe she will have more luck with Dylan.

Photo of Lucas and her horseAnother of Lucas’ passions is her love of horses. She has had her horse, Nellie, since she was 17 years old. Her boys share her love for Nellie, unlike Lucas’ mother. Lucas swears the horse tried to kill her mother while they were taking her senior portrait with the horse. She claims it was due to her mother making a bad decision—trying to ride the horse bareback. The horse was not receptive to the idea and pinned her mother against the gate to show its displeasure. Lucas said she was laughing hysterically and unable to be of much assistance.

Lucas’ education and experience working in student services at Butte College made her a great fit in the Evaluations Office. Please stop by and welcome her when you have the chance.
