Murrietta Moves to Records

Photo of Meredith MurriettaMeredith Murrietta has always had her eye on Chico State. As a high school student in Los Molinos, she knew Chico State was where she wanted to go to college. What she did not know then was that she would end up staying after graduation.

Murrietta enrolled at Chico State in 2006, a 17-year-old ready to experience all college life had to offer. She graduated in 2011 with a degree in liberal studies and a minor in philosophy. While going to school, she worked in the vice president for advancement’s office as a student assistant. It was then she realized that working on campus was where she wanted to start her career.

In 2012, Murrietta was hired as an administrative assistant in the Testing Office.  She enjoyed working on campus, but was offered an off-campus opportunity last year that she couldn’t refuse. While working full-time at her new off-campus position, she remained an intermittent employee with the Testing Office and worked on a PeopleSoft project in the evenings. She realized after six months of being away that she wanted to return to campus full-time, a place she sees as home.

In January 2016, Murrietta started working in the Office of the Registrar as a records support coordinator. Her work involves managing transcript requests, working with technical/functional duties within PeopleSoft, running statistical data, and getting to know her awesome coworkers.

Murrietta has already started on the next stage of her education. In 2013, she started working on her master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, consisting of two focuses; religious studies and literature. Her thesis will be on how C.S. Lewis, the novelist, dealt with death and grief throughout his literary works. The topic was of interest to her for a number of reasons, including the fact that he is a Christian. His works have had an influence on her own faith, and she is grateful to be able to focus her studies on this meaningful area.

She enjoys visiting the northern California coast, where she wishes she could bring the constant cold and foggy weather down to Chico. When she’s not traveling North, she’s visiting the bay area where she spends time with her niece and nephew (another niece is on the way!) Her dream vacation would be to travel to England and visit historical universities, including Oxford, the university that houses several works of C.S. Lewis.

Her uncle recently donated 20 albums to her collection and she is on the lookout for more. Some of her favorites include Bread, Jim Croce, Fleetwood Mac, and James Taylor.

A large part of Murrietta’s life goes into managing her Type 1 Diabetes, which she was diagnosed with at age 13. Being diagnosed at this age gave her a sense of responsibility and taught her how fragile life really is. Up until two years ago, she would have to take more than five injections of insulin a day. Now, she has an insulin pump that has greatly improved her ability to manage her blood sugars. She is very thankful for the support system she has through her family, friends, and many on campus.

One of her favorite places to go is the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina. While she’s no different from the rest of us wine lovers, she often goes to the abbey just to experience the peace she finds there, rather than to taste the wine.

You will find Murrietta in the Office of the Registrar and, most likely, with a smile on her face. She tries to display a positive attitude as much as she can and loves to laugh. Drop in and congratulate her on her new role and ask about her vinyl collection. She has some pretty cool albums.
