THE CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (TESOL)

This certificate provides training in the theory and practice of TESOL, with application to a wide variety of teaching circumstances.


Course Requirements for the Certificate: 21-22 units

The following courses, or their approved transfer equivalents, are required of all candidates for this certificate.

An overall GPA of 2.5 is required for the entire certificate.

The following four courses are required:

ENGL. 371 Principles of Language 3.0 Fa/Spr

ENGL. 372 Pedagogical Grammar 3.0 Fall

ENGL. 470 Theory and Practice of Second Language Acquisition 3.0 Fa/Spr (Prerequisites: ENGL. 371)

ENGL. 478 Linguistic Approaches to Reading 3.0 Spring (Prerequisites: ENGL. 371)

Choose three courses from the following :

ENGL. 474 Syntactic and Morphological Analysis 3.0 Spring (Prerequisites: ENGL. 371)

ENGL. 476 Phonological Analysis  (WP) 3.0 Fall  ( Prerequisites: ENGL 130 (or its equivalent) with a grade of C- or higher, ENGL. 371)

ENGL. 477 Semantics: Language and Meaning 3.0 Fall

ENGL. 431 Theory and Practice in Tutoring Composition 4.0 Fa/Spr
