Subject Matter Requirements Matrix

The English Education program at Chico State aims to prepare its students for the rigors of teaching English in California's public school system. English teachers must be conversant with the standards for English set by the California Department of Education, and the English Education program at CSU, Chico provides the deep knowledge that undergirds those standards. The program aims to foster thoughtful, knowledgeable, and skilled students of English, who will take their passion for all aspects of the English language arts into California's secondary classrooms.

About half of the English majors at Chico State enroll in the Option in English Education, with the intent of eventually attaining a California teaching credential. English Education majors complete what is called the single-subject waiver program, which consists of twelve core courses plus one of three breadth-and-perspective patterns. This program has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialling as providing the necessary course work for entry into a credential program at the completion of the major. Beyond completing the General Education and Major requirements, students wishing to earn a credential at Chico State must complete classes that are prerequisites for the credential program. English Education also serves those already holding a B.A. who need to obtain English subject matter competency for admission into a credential program, and offers two courses, ENGL 371 Principles of Language and ENGL 470 Second Language Acquisition, which are requirements for the Chico State credential program.
