Background

Where is Romania?
        Located in Southeastern Europe Romania a country slightly smaller than Oregon.  Romania is bordered by the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary, Moldova, and Yugoslavia.

Why Doesn't this country have a sense of pride?
        Romania has been controlled by different people throughout history.  It has been controlled by Greeks, Romans, Russians, Germans, Hungarians, and the Turks just to name a few

Who is to blame for this?
        Nicolae Ceausescu

Who is Nicolae Ceausescu ?
        Nicolae Ceausescu joined the Communist Party at age 14.  He was imprisoned both in 1936 and 1940 for his communist activities. Ceausescu held a variety of positions in the Communist Party until he became the General Secretary of Gheorghiu-Dej. When Gheorghiu-Dej died in March 1965, Ceausescu succeeded to the leadership of Romania's Communist Party and became the Communist head of state. In 1974 Ceausescu became president of Romania.
So why all the orphans?
        In an attempt to make Romania a future world power Ceausescu wanted a larger population, so he instated child requirement laws in which he required that women have 5 children by the age of 45 before he would allow them birth control or abortions
What happened to Ceausescu?
        In December of 1989 the people of Romania revolted against Ceausescu.  The tanks sent to destroy the protesters turned on Ceausescu and he was executed by firing squad on Christmas 1989.
