California State University MFA Creative Writing Consortium students are actively engaged in the writing life beyond the MFA program. Their publications include the following magazines: Black Warrior Review, Byline, Clackamas Literary Review, Ekphrasis, Enigma, Fourth Genre, Greensboro Review, Lullwater, Manzanita: Poetry and Prose of the Mother Lode, Midwest Poetry Review, Muse of Fire, New England Review, Perihelion, Tar River,and Troubadour 2000 . They have also published in the anthologies Shoreline: Poetry and Prose, Explorations of Mental Illness; and Bread and the Fields in It: The Soul of Hunger. One student's novel has been accepted for publication by Random House; another has published several travel handbooks for California and has contributed an article on the development of travel writing to The Literature of Travel and Exploration: An Encyclopedia; another will guest edit an issue of Manoa on contemporary Cambodian writing and has received Honorable Mentions in the 2000 O.Henry Awards and the 2001 Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses. They have given readings of their work in Bend, Oregon and Sacramento, California; they have chaired graduate student conference panels such as "Creative Writing 1," " Voices on the Edge: Creators and Critics," "Creative Heros: Constructing Students and Their Instructors" and presented conference papers at the Southwest Association for Language Learning Technology, the Humboldt Bridging the Gap Conference, and 4C's. They have also participated in Associated Writing Programs Annual Meeting roundtable discussions. MFA students have received grants for writing residencies at Norcroft Women Writers' Retreat and organized such community arts events as a poetry reading series at Calaveras County Central Library and a poetry conference Poems in the Forest: The First Annual Calaveras Big Trees Poetry Conference. They have won awards such as the 2000 Willard R. Espy Award from the University of Washington which included a $1000 prize. |
