triangle.gif (822 bytes) Stephen D. Gutierrez grew up in the City of Commerce, California, a small working class suburb outside of Los Angeles ("industrial suburb," the newspapers liked to say), migrated to Chico for his undergraduate degree, then finished his M.F.A. at Cornell University. Since 1992 he has been on the faculty at California State University, Hayward. He teaches in the English Department, Creative Writing, Fiction, and an occasional literature course, mostly Mexican American literature, drama and the short story.

His book, Elements, won the 1996 Charles H. and N. Mildred Nilon Excellence in Minority Fiction Award, and is published by Fiction Collective II. In recent years he has published essays as well as fiction in various magazines, including The Americas Review, Puerto del Sol, Santa Monica Review, Fiction International, New Chicano Writing, the minnesota review, Fiction, Fourth Genre: Explorations in Nonfiction, Fourteen Hills and ZYZZYVA.
