A major in English consists of courses in approaches to literature, chronological surveys of British and American literature, and a study of the history and principles of the English language as well as rhetorical approaches to composition. From this base students select particular periods and genres as well as electives in film, creative writing, linguistics, technical writing, editing and publishing, and modern literature. Course offerings in all periods and all genres explore the diversity of cultural perspectives represented in literatures written in English. Those interested in earning a Single Subject teaching credential in English major in one of the English Education options. The English Education program provides pre-professional preparation for those considering teaching English and the language arts at the junior high and high school levels. A minor in English provides an abbreviated version of the major plus elective courses in British and American literature, creative writing, modern literature, film, technical writing, linguistics, and editing and publishing. A minor in creative writing provides the opportunity to study the tradition and craft of poetry, fiction, and drama in writing workshops and modern literature classes. A minor in linguistics provides a foundation for the systematic study of languages of the world, the human language capacity, the relationship between language, culture, and society, and the acquisition of English as a second language. |
