How do I apply for CSU, Chico scholarships?

Complete our online scholarship application. Rather than filling out individual applications for each CSU, Chico scholarship opportunity, we have one application that allows you to be considered for over 500 institutional scholarships. Scholarships are awarded for the next academic year.

When is the application filing period?

The 2014/2015 scholarship application for CSU, Chico is available online in October. The application deadline is December 15, 2013.

Who is eligible to apply for scholarships?

Scholarships are available to all students eligible for regular admission who are incoming freshman, continuing or transfer (including out-of-state, AB540, and international students), undergraduate, credential or graduate students who plan to attend CSU, Chico. Students enrolled only through Regional and Continuing Education’s Open University are not eligible.

Scholarship eligibility is administered by the university and qualifications vary according to stipulations of individual donors who provided funding. Factors for consideration typically include scholastic achievement, academic major, involvement in school organizations, participation in community activities, career interest, and full-time enrollment. Depending on specific donor criteria these factors can vary, so regardless of your accomplishment, interests, or background, we encourage you to apply online for scholarships. Financial need may be considered but often not required.

How do I obtain a Chico State ID Number?

You must first apply for admission to California State University, Chico through the CSU Mentor admission web site. Within a few business days of submitting your application for admission, you will receive an official acknowledgement (from the CSU, Chico Admission Office) that your application was received and the Student ID Number that is assigned to you. You will also receive a WildcatMail email address which is used for all official university correspondence.

Do I have to submit additional documentation?

  1. You are required to submit a FAFSA or Dream application by the March 2nd priority filing deadline.
  2. Civil Engineering majors must submit a supplemental application to the Civil Engineering Department.  Contact the department for additional information.
  3. Letter of recommendation - As part of the online scholarship application you are required to enter at least one name and email address for a reference who will be asked to provide a letter of recommendation. These documents must be uploaded to your online application prior to the December 15th deadline. All documents that are submitted become the property of CSU, Chico and will not be returned.     Exceptions:
    Majors in the Music and Theatre Department:
    • must complete an audition for consideration of scholarship opportunities in the areas of music and theatre. Contact the department for audition schedules.
    • are not required to have a letter of recommendation for scholarships based on their major, however, by requesting a letter of recommendation you can be considered for scholarship opportunities outside your major.
    • if not requesting a letter of recommendation, you must enter email address Scholarships@csuchico.edu, name “Scholarship Office” in the letter of recommendation fields (required) on the online application.
    Majors in the Art and Art History Department:
    • must complete a portfolio.  Contact the department for additional information.
    • are not required to have a letter of recommendation for scholarships based on their major, however, by requesting a letter of recommendation you can be considered for scholarship opportunities outside your major.
    • if not requesting a letter of recommendation, you must enter email address Scholarships@csuchico.edu, name “Scholarship” in the letter of recommendation fields (required) on the online application.

Can I edit my scholarship application once it has been submitted?

You can access your online scholarship application to view or edit until the December 15th deadline.

How do I print a copy of my scholarship application?

The scholarship application is not designed to print an exact copy or PDF version of your completed application. We suggest you compose and save your essay questions before pasting them into the application.

When will recipients be notified?

The scholarship applications are reviewed in late spring and usually conclude in summer. Scholarship offers are entered in your financial aid package in summer. You will need to monitor your WildcatMail to see if you have been offered a scholarship. If you are awarded a scholarship, a congratulatory email will be sent to you stating the name and requirements of the scholarship. The notification process does not include a notification to all applicants, but only to the selected recipients of a scholarship.

Will I be notified if I don’t receive a scholarship?

Applicants not selected for a scholarship are not notified. If an original recipient does not maintain eligibility an alternate recipient is selected from the applications. Occasionally a new scholarship opportunity becomes available and the existing applicants are reviewed.

Will a scholarship award affect my Financial Aid?

Federal and state regulations require the coordination of all financial aid awards with all resources, including external (private) scholarships and grants, fellowships, fee waivers, including the Cal-Vet fee waiver, stipends, and vocational rehabilitation and other educational benefits. When you accept your financial aid award you agreed to report to the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office any additional resources given directly to you or that will be mailed to CSU, Chico. If the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office determines you have been over-awarded, your financial aid award may be reduced. Loan or workstudy eligibility are the first type of aid that may be reduced if necessary. Read more about Coordination of Resources.

How do I qualify to defer my July or December fee payment?

External scholarship funds received by CSU, Chico are considered part of a student’s pending aid. Notification of an expected scholarship are not considered pending aid. Recipients are required to pay the difference between university charges and pending aid by the fee payment deadline. How do I request verification of enrollment for an external scholarship?

If you receive an external scholarship, and your donor requires proof of enrollment from our campus, you may request unofficial enrollment verification printed by the student or official enrollment verification printed and mailed by CSU, Chico from your Student Center. Go to the Academics section, select Enrollment Verification. You may also complete a form at the Records and Registration Office, SSC 110.

Where does an organization send my scholarship check?

External (private) Scholarship checks should be mailed to:

Checks must be made payable to Chico State or California State University, Chico. Please ask the organization to include your name and Chico State Student ID number on the check and accompanying cover letter. For additional information read External Scholarships.

How do I know if CSU, Chico received my scholarship check?

When the check is received the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office will enter the amount in your financial aid award. You will be notified of a change to your award by your WildcatMail. Check your financial aid through your Student Center. For additional information read External Scholarships.

How can I apply for other external (private) scholarships?

External scholarships are a self-help form of financial assistance in recognition of an ability, talent, or quality that the scholarship sponsor deems worthy of reward. You should spend time researching scholarships and apply for every one for which you meet the minimum qualifications. You must make the effort. You won’t receive a scholarship if you don’t apply. How do I send a thank you letter?

You will be sent a request in the fall requesting a thank you letter for the generous scholarship donors that give to CSU, Chico to support students like you. Your letter reminds them why they gave in the first place and often help to secure continuing gifts for future students.
