Unique to the German program at CSU, Chico, is the exchange agreement with the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. Situated just minutes from the lively international city of Frankfurt, Mainz is a city of approximately 200,000 inhabitants which lies at the junction of the Rhein and Main rivers.

One student is selected annually to participate in this year-long exchange. The student receives a scholarship of approximately 4000 euros, which is paid over a 10-month period.  Students design their own course of study, according to their particular interests and abilities. Preference is given to majors. Application deadline is typically in December for the following academic year.

All public transportation in the broad region surrounding Frankfurt is free to students holding a valid university i.d. Students thus have the opportunity to travel and explore the region's vast historical, cultural, and social offerings at minimal cost.

Students may study at one of several institutions in the German state of Baden-Württemberg in conjunction with California State University's systemwide International Programs (IP). Located in southwest Germany, Baden-Württenberg is the nation's third largest state and is home to world-reknowned universities and technical schools in such urban and cultural centers as Stuttgart, Heidelberg and Tübingen.

The program can accomodate students at all levels of language proficiency.  Prior to attending regular courses at the university, students participate in a preparatory language program to build their language skills.  Students may then enroll in courses relevant to their own personal field of study. Specialized courses are available in areas such as agriculture, international business administration, engineering, and the natural sciences, in addition to the traditional liberal arts and German language and literature.  Internships--an experience which can prove both valuable and rewarding--may also be available to students successfully completing the program.

IP assists in international arrangements including academic planning, transportation, visas, housing, etc. Once abroad, students receive assistance from CSU resident staff.  Field trips, group activities, and cultural and recreational opportunities abound for students wishing to take advantage of them.

See the Cal State-Tübingen webpage or the IP webpage for more information.

Study in Lüneburg through the University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), of which CSU, Chico is a member.  Students may spend either one or two semesters in this charming historical town of 80,000.  More than 1000 years old, Lüneburg is located 25 minutes away from the metropolitan area of Hamburg and is only 30 minutes from the former border between East and West Germany.

The program provides intensive study of the German language for beginning to advanced students.  In addition, courses in literature, economics, political science, history, culture, and art history are taught in German or English, thus providing a broad range of electives from which to choose. Field trips are offered each semester to Hamburg, Lübeck, and Berlin.  These include guided tours of the main attractions at each site.

Students may choose to live with families, or they can share an apartment with local university students or other consortium participants.  USAC participants are matriculated as regular University of Lüneburg students, and thus enjoy all the benefits associated with university life, including free public transportation and discount meals in the university cafeteria.

For the lastest information, visit the University Study Abroad Consortium website.

You may choose to spend a summer working in Germany or Switzerland through Dr. Seefeldt's well-established International Cooperative Education Program. Each year, Dr. Seefeldt visits the CSU, Chico campus to provide information and to interview interested candidates. Visit the German Conversation Hour to meet and speak with students who have participated in the past.

The jobs are scattered among various locations in the German-speaking countries of Europe.  Available positions are extremely diverse; fields include health care, technical and mechanical fields, marketing, banking, agriculture, and clerical, among others.  Compensation is adequate enough to cover your expenses while living abroad.  ICE makes all housing arrangements.

You should have completed one year of college-level German prior to your stay abroad and must be currently enrolled in a language course the semester prior to your departure.
