German Conversation Hour

Beginning August 30th through the end of the semester, Conversation Hour meets every Thursday evening from 5:30 to 6:30pm at The Upper Crust on Main St. (across from 7-Eleven & Mr. Kopy). Come and speak German in an informal setting.  Instructors, students, German native speakers and local community members attend regularly. All are welcome!

Come to the annual German Program Potluck Picnic and bring your friends and family along for the German language, culture, music, and games, and of course GERMAN FOOD!

Gold Panning Adventure When: Saturday, October 8th, weather permitting. Details TBA as the date approaches.
German Progam Potluck Picnic When: Saturday, September 17th, 11:00am-3:00pm
Where: Five-Mile Recreation Area Bidwell Park

The German Program Potluck Picnic is an opportunity to socialize with others who share your interest in German language and culture. We will provide the bratwurst (and veggie burgers). We ask that you bring something to share with others, if possible - a salad, a dessert, chips or cookies, drinks, etc. If you're feeling really adventurous, maybe you'd like to try making a German dish! Friends and family are also welcome to attend.

Potluck Picnic

Join us at Five-Mile Recreation Area in Bidwell Park on Sunday, October 3, 2004, starting at 11:00 a.m. for the annual German Club potluck picnic. Bring your favorite (German?) dish, along with any games or equipment for outdoor activities. Wir sehen uns da!

German-American Heritage Days 2004 In honor of national German-American Day on October 6, the weeks from October 4th to 15th will be dedicated to celebrating America's vast German heritage. Visit the poster display in Humanities Center Gallery in Trinity Hall.

Gold panning trip
German Club event
The Chico State German Club & Butte College German Club will spend Saturday, September 11, 2004 gold panning at the Yuba River after visiting the local gold mining museum in Grass Valley. For exact times & meeting locations, contact Christine Goulding.
25th Annual International Festival April 24, 2004, noon - 5pm. The AS Multicultural Council and AS programming is sponsoring the all-day event featuring foods, performers, and cultural arts and crafts.
Languages and the Professions Fair
Spring 2004
Tuesday, May 4, 2004 , Information Fair: BMU Breezway, 11am-4pm. Reception: Sylvester's Cafe, 4-6pm. Come find out how majoring or minoring in foreign languages can enhance your career opportunities.
Concert: Einstürzende Neubauten On May 7, at 9pm, the Einstürzende Neubauten, a German band from Berlin, will perform at the Fillmore in San Francisco. See the links for more information about the concert and the band.
The Wilds of Europe Concert 2004 May 15 in Redding, May 16 in Chico. This North State Symphony concert includes music by Beethoven, among other European composers. Visit the School of the Arts for more info.

Celebrating the Fall of the Berlin Wall: 2002 Tuesday, November 12th, 2002, 6:00-8:30pm. Symposium and film on the 13th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
German Day 2002 Wednesday, October 9th, 9:30am-2:00pm. 450 high school and community college students from Northern California will come to campus to participate in workshops and activities related to German-speaking culture.
German-American Heritage Week 2002 In honor of national German-American Day on October 6th, the week of October 1st will be dedicated to celebrating America's vast German heritage.

2001  
German-American Heritage Week 2001 In honor of national German-American Day on October 6th, the week of October 1st will be dedicated to celebrating America's vast German heritage.
Oct. 1 - 5: Our German Heritage - poster display in Humanities Center, Trinity Hall
Oct. 2: Film on German immigration to the Americas. Tehama 107, 5pm.
Oct. 6: Potluck picnic in Bidwell Park, 11-3. Bring your favorite German dish. We'll also grill German bratwurst.
Hike to Lassen Peak Saturday, September 22, 2001. We'll meet at 9:30am in the parking lot across from the BMU and car pool to the base of the peak. Bring a lunch, some sun screen, and a few dollars to help pay the park entrance fee ($10 per car).
Celebrating the Fall of the Berlin Wall: 2000 Thursday, November 9th, 2000, 2:00-5:30pm. Symposium and film on the 11th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Refreshments will be served.

Every Wednesday beginning November 8th, 12:00-12:50pm through December 6th, 2000 in Glenn 125. Series Topic: Current Issues in Germany.

Dr. Magda Mueller organizes the Brown Bag Lunch Series.  Past topics include: Germany Within Europe, Dealing With the Nazi Past. This year the series addresses various topics, including the problems of reunification. In addition, some of our student majors will share their experiences in Germany.

Gunter Grass Symposium May 11, 2000. Come join the discussion on the 1999 Nobel Prize winner for literature and see the film based on the award-winning novel Die Blechtrommel (also available for rental in Meriam Library).
Fall of the Wall:  
10th Anniversary Event
November 9, 1999 marks the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Dr. Magda Mueller, Dr. Christine Manteghi, Dr. Gary Shockey, and Cindy Jorth will tell about their East-West experiences. Following discussion, Dr. Mueller will show the video "Ode to Joy and Freedom," documenting the history of the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989.

Sunday, October 3, 1999, starting at 2pm, at the One-Mile Recreation Area in Bidwell Park. The reunited Germany turns 9 years old! It will be a potluck picnic, so bring something if you can. 
 
German Studies Club Outing Saturday, March 13, 1999.  We will meet at 10:45am at the corner of 2nd St. and Chestnut St. to carpool to: The Cherokee Gold Museum, Table Mountain, and the Chinese Temple in Oroville.  Bring a sack lunch for the picnic on Table Mountain. German Resources in and around Chico
It's a proven fact that the more exposure you have to a foreign language,
the better and faster you will be able to learn that language.
Thus, we have put together a list of
20 Ways to Maximize your Contact with German
 
1. Attend the weekly German Conversation Hour on a regular basis. (See above for time and place.)
2. Take part in other German-related extracurricular events on campus, sponsored by the School of the Arts or the German Department.
3. Watch Deutsche Welle news online at http://www.dwelle.de/, available in German, English, and many other languages.
4. See German films offered on campus each semester or enroll in a German film course. Films are in German with English subtitles.
5. Check out a German film from Meriam Library. They are available in the Limited Loan section. Many are in the process of being catalogued, so they may not be in the online library catalogue. But if it is on the list, the library has it, so don't be afraid to ask. Or if the library is closed, Blockbuster has several titles in German with subtitles. Check in the foreign film section.
6. Learn about and listen to German bands and music online.
7. For beginners: Listen to the online audio files at http://www.prenhall.com/allesklar/ and http://www.prenhall.com/treffpunkt/
8. Check out some German books from Meriam Library and read them. You will find lots in the PT section of the library. The library also possesses a few German newspapers and magazines, such as Der Spiegel and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Many German-language periodicals are available online.
9. Buy some German books. They are readily available from the International Book Import Service via mail order. The price you pay is calculated at the exchange rate for the day and will include a shipping fee.
10. Take advantage of the multitude of online opportunities to practice German, to hear real German audio, see and hear news broadcasts, and to access millions of authentic texts on a variety of topics. There is something for everyone online. Check out some of the best German-language links available.
11. Find a pen pal in a German-speaking country. There are numerous online opportunities to find interested partners in other countries. 
12. Chat with people around the globe in German or on German-related topics in a German chat room. The chat room is always open, but there is a weekly schedule for moderated chat.
13. Read some German fairy tales. The complete collection of the Grimm Brothers' Märchen are available here.
14. Participate in German Club and German program activities -- from picnics to gold panning, from hiking to film nights, and outings to German-related events such as Oktoberfest and German Christmas markets.
15. Visit a German tutor in the Student Learning Center on the 4th floor of Meriam Library.
16. Locate and befriend native German students on campus.Get involved in International Students' activities. You can learn lots from them both culturally and linguistically.
17. If you are not already enrolled, take a German course. Note that German 020 may be taken concurrently with any other course following German 001. Also, some upper division courses have minimal or no prerequisites.
18. Form study groups with students in your German classes. You can learn lots from each other.
19. Take advantage of one of the the many study/work abroad opportunities at Chico State.
20. Read German news online daily or subscribe to the German News listserv and receive the news every day via e-mail.  It is available in both English and German.
