FOREIGN LANGUAGE CHARACTERS - ACCENTS WITH A PC

When in the MLLC (Taylor 207) or using the reserve computers in the library, you can enter foreign language characters into documents using the 3D Keyboard. If you use a PC at home, however, you may not have this software. It is still quite easy to enter foreign language characters.

  1. Activate the "Num Lock" key on your keyboard. This key is located on the number pad on the far right side of the keyboard. A green light will appear indicating that it is on.
  2. Hold down the ALT key
  3. Type in the number for the character (using the numbers on the far right of the keyboard).
  4. Release the ALT key.
  5. The appropriate character will appear in your document.

There are two sets of numbers that will create accents when used in combination with the ALT key; either 3 or 4 digits. The three digits should work in most applications. However, it may be necessary to use the four digits when working online or when using Notepad. The four digit codes are in parenthesis.
