Phi Sigma Iota

International Foreign Language Honor Society

Phi Sigma Iota recognizes outstanding ability and high standards of students and faculty of foreign languages, literatures and cultures (including classics, linguistics, philology, comparative literature, ESL, bilingual education, and second language acquisition). It is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. Phi Sigma Iota has initiated over 60,000 members since its foundation in 1917, and it has created and supports numerous scholarship programs.

Membership Information

 

Qualifications of Membership

Members are advanced undergraduates and graduate students in the fields of:

  •  Foreign Languages (including classics and ESL)
  •  Comparative Literature
  •  Foreign Language Education
  •  Linguistics
  •  Second Language Acquisition
Members are required to
  • Major or Minor in one of the above fields
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Attain junior standing or above before initiation
  • Be at the upper 35% of their class.

Teachers and Researchers in any of the above fields are eligible for membership

  • Following at least one year of service at the chapter's institution

 

Cost of Membership

New Members pay an initiation fee of $30 to the international society, which entitles them to:

  • be eligible for all membership programs organized or sponsored by the society
  • receive, for 3 years, the society's publications including The Forum
  • receive a certificate suitable for framing
  • receive a Phi Sigma Iota "Gold Key" or "Gold Pin"
  • wear special graduation honors (stoles, cords and tassels)
Continuing Members pay an annual* fee of $20 to the international society, which entitles them to:
  • be eligible for all membership programs organized or sponsored by the society
  • receive, for 1 year, the society's publications including The Forum

    *($55 for three years, $130 for lifetime)

    Scholarships

    Members receive the magazine The Forum and other official publications which promote information and creative writings in the field of foreign languages, literatures, and cultures.

    Members are encouraged to submit their own articles, reports, stories, poetry and travel

    Lifetime Membership

    A lifetime membership, payable in a single sum ($130), entitles you to

    • be exempt from all future national dues
    • be eligible for all membership programs organized or sponsored by the society
    • receive for life the society's publications including The Forum
