1. When a verb ends in a vowel [a e i o u] or N or S the stress is on the penultimate [the one before the last] syllable without your having to write and accent.
Stem changes occur on the stressed penultimate of the present tense [indicative and subjunctive] exept nosotros and vosotros.
2. Use a written accent to place the stress on the ultimate [the last] syllable when a word ends in a vowel [a e i o u] or N or S. [In other words, to break rule #1]
Present Tense Vosotros:

Preterit with regular endings in yo and él, ella, and usted forms:

3. When a word ends in a consonant [including y*] other than N or S. stress the ultimate [the last syllable].
Y as Consonant : estoy
All Infinitives: hablar, comer, vivir, respirar, entender, vestir
All Affirmative Vosotros Commands: hablad, comed, vivid, respirad, entended, vestid
4. Write an accent to preserve the original stress of a verb when object pronouns are added.
Infinitive: dármelo, traérselo, quitárselo, escribírnoslo, repetírtelo, presentártelas
*[But no if only one syllable is added: darme, traerlo, quitarlo, escribirnos, repetirlo, presentarte]
Gerund [present participle]: dándomelo, trayéndoselo, quitándoselo, escribiéndonoslo, presentándotelas
Affirmative Commands: Nosotros: sentémonos, escribámonos, abracémonos, entendámonos
Tú: ándale, siéntate, acuéstate, escríbemelo, cuéntanoslo, repíteselo, pídenoslo
Usted: siéntese, acuéstese, escríbamelo, cuéntenoslo, repítaselo, pídanoslo
Ustedes: siéntense, acuéstense, escríbanmelo, cuéntennoslo, repítanselo, pídannoslo
Vosotros: escribídmelo, enviádnoslos, repetídnoslo
5. To stress the antepenultimate [the third syllable from the end] you must always, always write an accent.
Imperfect indicative, nosotros: hablábamos, pensábamos, respirábamos
Imperfect subjunctive [nosotros]: que habláramos, que bebiéramos, que viviéramos
6. Write an accent on the letter í to keep its sound separate from a, e, or o.
Present indicative: yo sonrío, tú sonríes, él sonríe ella sonríe nosotros sonreímos, vosotros sonreís, ellos sonríen
Present subjunctive: para que yo sonría, para que tú sonrías, para que él sonría, para que ella sonría, para que nosotros sonríamos, para que vosotros sonríais, para que ellos sonrían
Imperfect indicative: comía, comías, comía, comíamos, comíais, comían
affirmative vosotros command + os: vestíos, cubríos
7. Write an accent on the letter ú to keep its sound separate from a, e, i, or o.
8. Write an accent on one of two identical words to distinguish them.
