Prerequisites: SPAN 004
or equivalent. May be taken concurrently with SPAN 120 and/or SPAN 133.
Intensive review of grammar and its application in composition. This course
or its equivalent is a prerequisite for all other upper-division courses. Required
of all majors and minors.

NO MAKE-UPS ON DATED QUIZZES OR EXAMS UNLESS PREVIOUSLY ARRANGED WITH PROFESSOR.
10% Participation and Preparation. Because learning a foreign language requires considerable practice, your attendance and participation are vital to your success in Spanish 104A. An excellent participation grade will reflect that you ask questions, answer questions, contribute actively in-group work, and are well-prepared for the topics covered. You should always read the chapter material before class.
If you are not in class, you can not participate. Therefore unexcused absences and tardiness will be reflected in the participation grade. If you are absent, please arrange to get notes from a classmate. Excessive absences (8 or more) will result in failure of the class.
10% Homework. For each topic, you will be assigned specific exercises to complete outside of class. Whether the exercises are written out or on-line, they should be completed before class time.
40% Writing. You will keep a free-writing journal and complete four formal compositions. Instructions for the journal and for each composition are included below.
20% Quizzes. There will be a major quiz at the end of each chapter covering grammar terminology, language structures and forms, and usage rules. There may be other smaller quizzes, announced or unnanounced. Most quizzes will be electronic, on WebCT.
10% Midterm Exam. Thursday, March 13 11 am - 12:15 pm
10% Comprehensive Final Exam. Thursday, May 22 10 am - 11:50 pm
YOU ARE EXPECTED TO COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMS WITH ACADEMIC HONESTY. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY INCLUDES (BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO) APPROPRIATING WEB ESSAYS OR USING TRANSLATING PROGRAMS TO COMPLETE ONEÕS OWN ESSAYS.
ANY CHEATING OR PLAGIARISM WILL RESULT IN FAILING THE CLASS AS WELL AS BEING REPORTED TO STUDENT JUDICIAL AFFAIRS.
