Spanish 302-02: Reading and Composition

Course Objectives and Goals:  This course is a continuation of composition studies begun in Spanish 301, with an emphasis on fluency, style, and syntax.  The course will cover the entire writing process including: idea generation, outlining, rough drafts, revisions and production of final drafts.

 

Definition of Letter Grading Symbols (2000-2003 University Catalog, page 158):

Undergraduate Courses (numbered 1 to 299):

A -- Superior Work:

A level of achievement so outstanding that it is normally attained by relatively few students.

B --Very Good Work:

A high level of achievement clearly better than adequate competence in the subject matter/skill, but not as good as the unusual, superior achievement of students earning an A.

C -- Adequate Work:

A level of achievement indicating adequate competence in the subject matter/skill. This level will usually be met by a majority of students in the class.

D -- Minimally Acceptable Work:

A level of achievement which meets the minimum requirements of the course.

F -- Unacceptable Work:

A level of achievement that fails to meet the minimum requirements of the course. Not passing.

General Course Requirements:

1.     Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance is required for this course.  Beginning with the fourth unexcused absence, 5% will be taken off the final grade.  Beginning with the eighth absence, 10% will be taken off the final grade.

2.     Participation:  Active participation in every class discussion (asking and answering questions) is required for full credit in this category.

3.     Student work: The student must complete all assignments on her/his own. A tutor or other qualified person may only be consulted in order to explain points of grammar or offer stylistic suggestions.  The student may not have her/his work proof read or corrected by tutors or native speakers.  There will be ample opportunity for students to carry out peer-editing with other students in the class.

4.     NO makeup work will be given.  Late assignments will NOT be accepted.

5.     Reading assignments – all reading assignments must be completed by the date outlined in the syllabus.  Pop quizzes will be given to ensure student completion of this requirement, and can be a major part of the participation grade.  The frequency of pop quizzes will depend upon overall class participation in discussions and activities based on reading assignments.

6.     Homework – all written assignments must be completed in a timely manner, by the date on the syllabus; none will be accepted late.

 

Assignments

Journal: A journal or discussion submitted electronically at the WebCT component of the class (go to webct.csuchico.edu:8080), discussing topics assigned by the instructor.  Each entry will be assigned a grade (A, B, C, etc.) based on content and structure.  The organization and presentation of ideas are important as well structural aspects such spelling and grammar.  The following is expected from each entry: (1) insightful analysis and/or interpretation, 2) a well-argued and coherent discussion, and 3) good punctuation, spelling and grammar, including written accents.  Entries must be submitted before the class session when they are assigned in the calendar (topics will be locked afterwards).

Compositions: Each student will be responsible for writing 3 compositions and 3 (optional) revisions.  It is imperative that all compositions be typed on a word processor or personal computer.  The composition will be double-spaced with only the student¹s I.D. number appearing at the top, with an appropriate title one line below.  The compositions should be written using Times or Times New Roman as the font (12 pt).  No credit will be given if the composition is not brought to class the day it is assigned.

Homework: Each homework assignment must be completed before coming to class.  The assignments will be specified in the tentative schedule or the instructor will announce them, at least, one class in advance.

 

Grading Criteria

 

A = 94– 100          A- = 90 – 93.4      B+ = 88 – 89.4      B = 84 – 87.4      B- = 80 – 83.4 etc.

Viernes 22       Traer la primera versión de la Composición 1 (No escriba su nombre, solamente los últimos 4 dígitos de su número de seguro social): Escribir en una página y media (1.5) una narración real o ficticia, que incluya suficiente descripción.  Peer-editing fuera de clase: cada estudiante se llevará a casa una composición para revisarla con detenimiento.  Leer pp. 53-61 de C:PS.

Lunes 25         WebCT #4: ³El hombre muerto²; devolver las composiciones revisadas y entregar al profesor una copia de los comentarios hechos a la composición revisada.  Práctica de gramática y/o vocabulario.

Lunes 29         Traer la primera versión de la Composición 3.  Deben escribir 3-5 páginas en donde desarrollan la tesis del bosquejo preliminar.  Este ensayo requiere hacer investigación y debe tener, como mínimo, cuatro fuentes bibliográficas, dos de las cuales deben ser en español.   Además dos de esas fuentes deben ser de la biblioteca.  Peer-editing fuera de clase: cada estudiante se llevará a casa una composición para revisarla con detenimiento.  Lectura  y análisis literario en clase.
