Course Objectives:
We will learn the system of sounds
(phonology) which underlies Spanish as it is spoken. Stress will be made on
learning the correct pronunciation of Spanish sounds through oral practice and
phonetic transcription. We will contrast Spanish pronunciation with the English
to get a comparative understanding of language as an active phenomenon.
The student will be introduced to the
most important differences in pronunciation between the various dialects of
Latin America and Peninsular Spanish.
We will also study how Spanish evolved
from its ancient Latin roots.
