Description and Objectives:

This course explores a broad range of cultural, social and political topics such as Celtic, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim influences on early Spain, the Golden Age of Spanish culture and literature, the Spanish Inquisition, the Carlist Wars, the Civil War, the monarchy under Juan Carlos I, etc. In art we will delve into the works of artists such as Goya, Velázquez, Picasso, Dalí, and Gaudí.  The course is structured on an important historical component that requires a good deal of reading and reflection.

We will experience the culture of Spain through various means:

·      Readings and class discussions.

·      Music, films, library and Internet research and virtual visits to museums, the royal palaces and Flamenco tablaos, attending live performances offered by the University and/or the community.

·      Cultura Viva events will provide personal ³live² cultural experiences to enhance our discussions and readings:  a visit to the on-campus reproduction of the paintings of the caves of Altamira, flamenco presentation, a possible visit to the site of a 12th c. Spanish Monastery reconstruction (Chapter House at the Abbey of New Clairveaux), etc.

·      I will utilize some class periods to share my experiences living and traveling in Spain (photography, cultural artifacts, realia, music, video, personal observations, etc.), as they relate to the material covered by the course.

Course materials:

·      Ugarte, Francisco, Michael Ugarte and Kathleen McNerney.  España y su civilización.  5th ed. actualizada, 1999

·      Reading Selections prepared by Professor (P)

·      Internet Access

·      Spanish Language Dictionary (I suggest the college editions of American Heritage Larousse, Larousse Concise Spanish/English Dictionary, Oxford, or Harper Collins).

Requirements:

·      Regular attendance and class participation.  Starting with the fourth unexcused absence, 5% will be taken off the final grade per absence.  See the professor if you need clarification on this.

·      Homework - We will cover many topics every week, therefore disciplined daily reading is essential.

·      Individual/Group Oral Presentations – For this oral presentation students will work individually or in groups of up to three people.  The student(s) will present information on a cultural (art, architecture, music, history, politics, etc.) topic relating to one of various major epochs in the history of Spain. You may not present on a literary figure from Spain. Each individual or group will be allowed 10 – 20 minutes (depending upon the size of the group) to give their presentation during class.  The grade will be based on evidence of research carried out for the project, accuracy of said information, memorization of the material presented, the use of technology (including, but not limited to slides, videos, overhead transparencies, music, and/or live performance, etc.), clarity of ideas, the obvious amount of preparation involved in the project, and the correct use of grammar and vocabulary related to the subject.  In the past, presentations that received an ³A² were done on computer and/or video, using software like PowerPoint, web pages, or were done as live dramatic, dance or musical performances.   The day of the presentation, an electronic copy of the group or individual project must be turned into the professor on diskette, CD-ROM or Video, along with a complete/detailed outline for each class member of the information to be presented.  As you prepare your oral presentations use a minimum of four sources for your information; include this information in a bibliography at the end of your presentation.  You may use the Internet to obtain images, videos, quotes, etc. for your presentation, but you must cite the author of the information and must utilize at least two non-internet sources in your research.

·      Research Paper – This research paper may be based on the subject matter studied for the oral presentation, but group members using the same topic must choose a different focus for their individual papers.  The paper cannot be about an author or a piece of literature.  The paper should be an analysis and synthesis of the information you studied on the topic.  Don¹t just quote information; explain to me why it is important in the history or the present culture(s) of Spain.  How has the subject of the topic affected a region of Spain or the country as a whole?  How did your the subject of your topic have a lasting effect on Spain and its people?  As you prepare your paper, create a very clear  thesis paragraph in which you delineate precisely the major points you want to make in the paper. Then use the body of the paper to defend the ideas, point by point, that you made in the thesis statement.  Conclude with a solid paragraph that sums up the paragraphs that you presented and provides information or ideas on the subject that could be researched further.

The research paper must be double-spaced, with one-inch margins, using Times or Times New Roman as a 12 point font.  A separate works cited page and title page should be included and these do NOT count in the number of pages required. Follow the MLA Style Manual for instructions on how to format the bibliography and parenthetical references within the text.  10% of the overall grade will be taken off if you do not follow the MLA rules.  The paper must be written in Spanish and all quotes should be in their original language (provide a translation only if the quote is not in Spanish, English, Portuguese, Galician or French).  The paper will be a minimum of 6 pages (excluding the title page and bibliography) and maximum of eight pages.  A minimum of five sources must be cited, including at least two references in Spanish. Do NOT use any Internet sources to write the paper unless it is an official government or cultural organization web site.  In this case, only one web site may be used AND the professor must clear it in class before you write the paper.  All papers must be submitted as a Microsoft word or rtf file by e-mail attachment to me on the due date, and a copy must be submitted electronically at http://www.turnitin.com

Note: It is expected that all work will be your own.  Please be aware that PLAGIARISM is defined as adopting anyone¹s ideas as your own without giving them full credit for their work.  DO NOT copy material out of books or other sources without giving very precise, exact, parenthetical references for each quotation. DO NOT paraphrase another person¹s work without giving a parenthetical reference.  If a student is in doubt about any of this, s/he should seek help from the instructor.  Even an Internet source must be carefully cited when referred to in the text, indicating the author, URL, etc.).  Acts of plagiarism are grounds for an ³F² in the class and possible university disciplinary action.

·      There will be 5 unit exams, based on the chapters that we study in class. EACH DATE ON THE TENTATIVE SCHEDULE MARKED WITH **** INDICATES A TEST DAY.  The test will be available electronically for 48 hours after class on the test day and should be taken at your earliest convenience.  Test time will be a maximum of 1 hour.  Dr. Miller will explain the format before the first exams.

·      Final Exam – will be comprehensive, but will emphasize the material studied after the last unit exam.

·      Participation in all CULTURA VIVA Events is required.

·      NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED.
