Custodial Department
Facilities Management and Services Custodial Department
provides professional cleaning services to all University buildings, excluding
security areas. To service over one and a half million
square feet of academic, sports, and administrative buildings, the Custodial
Department keeps fifty-four regular employees, two supervisors,
and the manager very busy with a wide range of daily, monthly, and periodic
cleaning tasks and special events. To put their daily duties in perspective,
each custodian is responsible for cleaning fourteen 2000 square foot homes
each night!
Custodial
maintenance is provided to all general fund supported University facilities.
Non-general fund programs may be provided service on a chargeback basis.
Typical services include cleaning, sanitizing, floor care, stocking paper
products, changing interior light bulbs, and collecting and disposing
of refuse. Most custodial services are scheduled between 11:00 pm and
7:00 am.
Frequency of Custodial Cleaning
Daily Cleaning in Office
- Empty trash receptacles and replace plastic liners that are torn or
obviously soiled.
- Replace light bulbs as needed.
- Check office floors for spills.
- Spot clean floors as needed.
Weekly Cleaning in Offices
- Dust mop or sweep non-carpeted floors completely.
- Vacuum carpeted floors completely.
- Damp mop non-carpeted floors completely.
- Spot clean inside/outside of trash receptacles.
- Damp wipe and disinfect contact surfaces such as push plates, door
handles, and hand rails.
Daily Cleaning in Classrooms and Impacted Areas
- Empty trash receptacles and replace plastic liners that are torn or
obviously soiled.
- Dust mop and sweep non-carpet floors completely.
- Clean aisles and seating areas.
- Replace light bulbs as needed.
- Clean chalk board trays as needed.
- Spot vacuum carpet as needed.
- Empty out pencil sharpeners as needed.
Weekly Cleaning in Classrooms
- Wet mop classroom completely.
- Spot clean inside/outside of trash receptacles.
- Vacuum entire classroom completely.
- Remove carpet stains.
- Wipe down desks, chairs, and tables.
- Damp wipe and disinfect contact surfaces such as push plates, door
handles, and hand rails.
Daily Restroom Care
- Flush toilets and urinals. Check for stoppage.
- Remove trash, empty sanitary napkin receptacles and replace paper
bags.
- Replenish supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and toilet seat
covers.)
- Dust (with a damp cloth or sponge) tops of mirror frames, top edge
of tiles, top of toilet stall partitions, all containers, lights, vents,
and shelves.
- Spot clean doors, walls, partitions, and waste receptacles.
- Clean sink basins, rise and polish chrome, clean mirrors.
- Clean toilets and urinals including underneath, sides, edges and urinals
throat with a disinfectant solution. Use bowl cleaner only on the inside
of toilet and urinals.
- Clean tile around and behind bowls, toilets, and urinals.
- Check lights and change burned out lights as needed.
- Wet mop floor, remove all scuff marks, and clean in corners.
- At least three (3) times a week, pour at least one (1) gallon of clean
water, not mop water, down the floor drain to prevent sewer gas odor.
General Cleaning within the Building
- Hallways and Corridors: Mop daily and burnish weekly.
Vacuum all carpeted floors daily.
- Entrance Areas: Clean inside entrance areas daily. Vacuum entrance
mats daily.
- Restrooms: Clean daily.
- Elevators: Clean floors, walls and tracks daily.
- Conference Rooms: Clean daily.
- Kitchen Areas: Clean counters and sinks, and sweep and mop floors.
- Stairway Areas: Sweep and mop steps, handrails, sills, horizontal
surfaces and wall spotting on a semimonthly basis.
- Light Bulbs: Replace burned out bulbs and tubes.
- Lobby and Public Areas: Vacuum carpet and mop tile floors daily.
- Drinking Fountains: Cleaned and disinfected daily.
- Hallways or Corridors: High Speed buffing, burnishing of hard floors,
and extraction of carpet in main thoroughfares is done weekly.
Building Security
All building doors and windows are locked nightly. Custodians keep a
watchful eye on campus buildings and quickly report any suspicious activity
to University Police. This helps reduce incidents of vandalism, vagrancy,
and building theft. However, custodians are not to give access to the
campus community. If access is needed to any area, please call University
Police, ext. 5372.
Building Maintenance
Custodians ensure that their buildings receive immediate attention from
Facilities Management staff when situations such as broken water pipes,
power outages, stuck elevators, backed up drains or broken lights occur.
