Text: R.H.Scott, Money, Financial Markets and the Economy, Prentice Hall, 1995. The textbook will be available at Mr. Kopy for about $30.
Changes may be made in assignments and other aspects of this course as the term progresses. They will be announced in class. It is your responsibility to keep informed. University rules for academic integrity will apply.
This course is devoted to the study of the institutional structure of financial markets including governmental controls over money and credit, theories of interest rate determination, and finally, the study of the policies implemented by monetary and fiscal authorities. Students are asked to read straight through the assigned reading prior to coming to class. Please pay close attention to end-of-chapter questions
Grading will be based on the total points earned on all exams plus an adjustment based on the instructor’s subjective assessment of classroom participation and overall performance. Attendance will be monitored through seating charts, so be sure to occupy the seat that was assigned to you. You will be allowed to miss three lectures after the first week of classes. A greater number of absences will result in a reduction of your final course grade. Exams will require short essay answers and questions will cover all reading, all handouts, all class discussions, and all lectures. No examinations will be given at other than scheduled times without documentation of a compelling reason.

Reading and assigned work for students taking Finance 160, Fall 2004. Add this page to Course Outline.
Each group of 4-5 students should select a Group Secretary to record, and pass in to the instructor, the names and phone number or email or other contact information on each member of the group. Each student’s name should be on the seating chart that will be used to monitor attendance.
On each 3-credit hour class a student should work 4-6 hours of outside of class each week: Take one hour reading the chapter, two hours to read carefully and take notes on reading in own handwriting (keep written notes available to show to instructor on demand), and 1 hour to work up answers to end of chapter questions with a group of colleagues working together. If you take 15 credit hours your total work on class materials including attendance would be 45 hours per week—a full time academic load.
ALSO! Notes should be taken on all lectures and class discussions and be available to show the instructor along with notes taken on all reading assignments.
1st week’s assignment:
For Finance 160-1 Five groups of 5 students 28 copies needed, one for each classmate.
For Finance 160-2 Four groups of 5 students 21 copies needed.
One copy from each group for the instructor. Each answer should identify by name the student principally responsible for the answer. Answers should be written in the student’s own handwriting (not on a computer nor by typewriter).
