4 Action item: Resolution – Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA)
Trailer was available to answer questions. Question: “In light of the Provost’s involvement in CLA, is she aware of the resolution that is underway?” It was clarified that the Provost’s role on the statewide committee is a narrow one of choosing among three different exams. It was pointed out that in other campuses CLA has been administered without much recognition by the faculty. It was also pointed out that the Chico campus will go ahead with their plan to administer the CLA this Spring as currently mandated by the Chancellor’s Office.
The resolution was passed unanimously.
5. Introduction item: New Certificate – Professional Sales Certificate
Tim Heinz and Shekar Misra from the College of Business presented the proposal. EPPC members raised questions to ensure (a) there were no hidden prerequisites (b) the Certificate was meaningfully different from the Minor (c) that transfer students would be held to the same GPA requirements (d) who the target audience is and (e) whether the Certificate would ultimately lead to on-going accreditation.
Proposal was unanimously accepted as an introduction item.
6. Discussion item: Major/Minor Grade Point Average Calculation
A slide show presentation was made by Bruce Rowan, Assistant Vice Provost, and Misty Cannon, Lead CMS facilitator for the Degree Progress Report.
Two changes are to happen to the way Major/Minor GPAs are calculated.
1. When courses are repeated without forgiveness, the highest grade will be chosen.
2. Whenever more courses than necessary are taken the highest grades will be counted. (This, however, largely happens in practice now anyway.)
Way summarized the sentiment as favoring adding a line to EM -92-13 regarding this so that students and faculty will be aware of this change. It will be an Introduction Item at the next EPPC meeting. Since the discussion has already occurred, rules can be waived to make it an action item. Way to work on language to describe the new calculation process correctly and clearly.
Meeting was adjourned at 3:53.
Respectfully submitted,
Richard Ponarul
