Outstanding Faculty Service - Jean Schuldberg
Dr. Jean Schuldberg is a Professor at California State University, Chico (CSU, Chico) in the School of Social Work. She has served as the Director of the Master of Social Work (MSW) program since 2006. The MSW program is the largest graduate program on the CSU, Chico campus and serves an average of 125 MSW students per year. The programs include a One-Year MSW for students who have earned a Bachelor degree in social work, a Two-year MSW program, and a Three-Year Distributed Education program for students who reside in remote regions and/or are employed full time.
Dr. Schuldberg is Co-Director for the CSU, Chico Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE) that is administered by the New York Academy of Medicine. This program trains MSW students as leaders in service to older adults and their families. Dr. Schuldberg is committed to increasing the number of social workers versed in gerontology to meet the needs of our growing population of older adults. Dr. Schuldberg is also Coordinator of the CSU, Chico Mental Health Stipend Program that trains graduate social students for work in the public behavioral health system. The focus is on a recovery and wellness model that addresses self-determination and collaboration in mental health treatment. In addition to her campus duties, Dr. Schuldberg was appointed in April 2013 by Governor J. Brown to serve on the California Commission on Aging.
Dr. Schuldberg earned a Doctor of Education in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco, a Master of Social Work from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Oregon. Her interests include gerontology, behavioral health, genocide and reconciliation, immigrants and refugees, curriculum development, cultural competency in social work education, and distributed education. She is interested in transnational social work and has traveled to Thailand and Rwanda, Africa to meet with social workers and educators. Dr. Schuldberg’s research has resulted in journal articles and two books based on her interests.
