The Faculty's Legacy Gift in Honor of President Zingg's Inauguration

My practice focuses on the physicality of obsessive mark making to manipulate and transform surface. Simplistic tools that have been replaced by faster and more productive machines intrigue me primarily for their mark making potential and their historical implications. I find beauty in the human element of imperfection and irregularity; the creativity and intuition of the human mind can transcend the constraints that mechanical systems operate within.
This piece has been created entirely by hand with a single sewing needle. Isolating the needle from its intended function and using it exclusively for its mark making potential, provides me with an unconventional drawing tool. By using this laborious and unpredictable process, my accumulation of pinprick punctures simultaneously constructs and demolishes the paper’s surface emphasizing tension and fragility.
